Sustainable circular animal feed from former food products

Trotec is a West Flanders-based family business that processes by-product streams and production waste from the food industry into circular ingredients for animal feed. Since 1968, the company has been using broken biscuits and misshapen bread for this purpose, for example. These are no longer usable for human consumption, but are obviously still full of valuable nutrients.

Trotec turns former food products into feed ingredients that replace primary raw materials such as maize and wheat. By collecting and processing them, Trotec ensures that the valuable products do not disappear into the food waste mountain. The company saves agricultural land and creates a more sustainable agricultural sector. A double win: revalorisation and a sustainable circular food production chain.

With the support of VLAIO, Trotec developed several innovation projects to optimise their processes. For example, thanks to smart containers at the food producers where Trotec collects the foodstuffs. These containers automatically monitor the quantity of by-products collected. This makes collection even more efficient without additional complex administration in this circular approach.

Trotec is looking for new ways to further increase its impact by investigating in which other application areas circular ingredients can be used, launching the brand new project 'Circularity tailored at your needs'. In this way, Trotec continues to pioneer in food residue streams circular use.
