Who steers what at Flanders Circular?
Renasci offers a circular solution for plastic and waste that already meets the European 2030 target. This target sets a goal of reusing or recycling at least 70% of our waste.
The fully automated sorting plant separates the mixed waste streams into different material fractions (plastic, organic, metal, etc.). The plastics are further divided into different categories. The hard plastics, such as HDPE and PP, can be mechanically recycled and used in applications where food contact is not a requirement.
The plastics-to-chemicals (P2C) process breaks down the plastic polymer into an oil, which is used as a raw material for the production of new plastics. The main by-product of this process is used as fuel to generate electricity for the facility. The current plant has been operational since September 2020, with capacity incrementally increased to reach 20k tonnes/year. .
In the next phase, we aim to implement the Smart Chain Processing (SCP) concept at new sites by working with local partners. The flexibility of SCP allows us to respond to local waste issues such as municipal waste, certain types of medical waste, textiles, rubber, sludge etc....
