What is circular water?

Circular water means applying the principles of the circular economy to water use by:

  • using less water;

  • choosing the right water for the right application;

  • reusing water.

Important rules of thumb

Do not use higher quality than necessary and choose more sustainable water sources whenever possible. All the time mindful of what the water system can handle - now and in the future.

To accelerate circular water use and contribute to a robust water system, the strategic agenda 'water loops' unites the actors involved, in a joint action plan.

Leaders

The strategic agenda has two initiators: the Flanders Environment Agency (VMM) and the Flemish Employers Platform (VWP), also known as the Flemish Entrepreneurs.

The Circular Water platform, under the aegis of the Coordinating Committee on Integrated Water Policy(CIW), runs in parallel to the operations of the Strategic Agenda 'Water Loops'. Through the CIW, the network is being further extended.

, In addition, the strategic agenda is aligned with existing initiatives against drought and water scarcity such as the Blue Deal.

How do we address any challenges?

As a central hub, the strategic agenda 'water loops' pools knowledge and experiences on circular water use from the actors involved.

We demonstrate good examples. We give pioneers a helping hand to grow and accelerate. We identify any obstacles and leverage. And we propose actions to make the circular shift a reality.
