Recypark: where circularity and skating come together

Ever rolled up to the recycling park on a skateboard? At Anderlecht's Demetskaai, it has been possible since October 2024. There, architectural firm 51N4E, Witteveen+Bos and Rotor vzw built the ‘Recypark’ on behalf of the Net Brussels Agency. This is a container park with a green and a blue skate zone.

Most recycling parks are located somewhere on the outskirts of the municipality or the city. This is not the case with the Demets Recypark: it is located right between the Brussels-Charleroi canal and the future residential area in the Birmingham district. In this way, Agency Net Brussels brings circularity close to the city, the water and the people. With a skate zone and a green public space, the agency also wants to bring more life to the neighbourhood.

Skating in green
The skate zone is a design by Les Marneurs. With that design, the French agency winks at ... the container park itself. Recycling and reuse are central. Thus, the team covered the public space with a recovered canopy made of plywood. That 26-metre-wide canopy came from a riding school in Liège. The roof of the large hall of the public square catches rainwater, which in turn keeps the rain gardens green.

Skate park with Brussels touch
Finnish landscape architect Janne Saario complemented the design with obstacles made of low-carbon concrete. These are reminiscent of the typical guide blocks you often find in Brussels. And the snake run slaloms between trees and grassy areas, just like a river leading to the canal.
