Samsonite produced circular travel cases made from recycled polypropylene and PET bottles.
In 2019, Samsonite produced the first circular suitcase using recycled plastic waste to mark Earth Day. This suitcase is 'made in Belgium' and was the first in the world to be made from recycled household plastic waste. Following the success of this first line, Samsonite launched the Magnum ECO line of suitcases in 2021. These too are made entirely from secondary plastics.
The team at the European Innovation and Development Centre in Oudenaarde is constantly researching innovative materials and technologies. The result: advanced products that are comfortable to use, made with the lightest materials. And that combined with excellent quality and durability. Samsonite's circular S'Cure ECO "Green Grey" suitcase is one such product and is perfectly tailored to the needs of the modern traveller while being stylishly finished.
The outside of the suitcase is made from recycled polypropylene from post-consumer packaging, while the inner fabric is made from recycled PET bottles. That means the large suitcase contains about 483 yoghurt pots and 14 plastic bottles. This makes the whole suitcase sustainably made, and it is also light and strong in use. The base material of the suitcases comes from Quality Circular Polymers (QCP), a collaboration of SUEZ and LyondellBasell that produce circular polymers in the Netherlands.
Samsonite is constantly looking for new ways to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. This allows Samsonite and QCP to recycle some 55 000 tonnes of plastic a year. These suitcases made from sustainable materials are just the beginning.
