Brouwerij De Halve Maan

Sustainable beer that tastes good

Brugse Zot, Straffe Hendrik and Blanche de Bruges: not only delicious, but also sustainable. Brewery De Halve Maan has been fully committed to innovation for six generations. They purify wastewater, recover heat and transport beer through a pipeline under the city.

Do you know the beer pipeline that brings beer from downtown Bruges to the bottling plant on the outskirts of town? Brewery De Halve Maan thus ensures that every liter of beer can be brewed on the historic site without disturbing the livability of the city. After all, a lot of truck trips are saved.

With the beer pipeline, De Halve Maan's sustainability story got off to a solid start. Although the brewing family had initially decided to cease operations, Xavier Vanneste ensured an innovative relaunch. In recent years, several investments were made to keep the ecological footprint as small as possible.

The brewery works with local raw materials whenever possible. They were also one of the first brewers to sign the Flemish government's Green Deal. Together with other participating breweries, they are committed to further reducing water consumption in the sector. With its own water treatment plant, wastewater is purified into potable water, which can be reused in the production process.

Most of the packaging is reusable or made from recycled material. In addition, new recyclable one way solutions were developed for export to distant destinations. With its solar panels, the brewery also supplies up to 65% of its own electricity consumption.
