Sustainable snack from the residual stream of beer production

Flemish brewery Alken-Maes and Dutch start-up MaGie Creations launched a new snack last summer: the Cristal Cracker. That new product is made from draff, a residual product from beer brewing processes.

Draff used to go mainly to animal feed producers. But thanks to an enlightening thought process on the potential of this by-product, a new application came out of the brainstorming froth. As of now, it is the basis for a tasty snack with a rich cheddar-chilli flavour.

With this creative approach to waste streams, Cristal is tapping from a different sustainability barrel. The Cristal Cracker is a responsible choice as it is rich in protein (18%), fibre (7%) and low in sugar (2%).

The cracker is already in several Belgian cafés that serve Cristal. Meanwhile, Alken-Maes is exploring the possibilities of offering this snack on a larger scale. Let's sound off on it, because Cristal shows that you can innovate sustainably by reusing residual products in an original way. Schol!
