Ecosystem for natural building materials

The Interreg project CASCO aims to make building with natural and local materials the standard for building professionals in Flanders and the Netherlands.

Local and natural building materials from agriculture and forest and green space management store CO2 in their growth phase. Materials such as wood, straw, hemp and roadside clippings can thus significantly reduce the ecological footprint of the building sector. Only, unfortunately, they are barely used to date.

The Interreg project CASCO, short for Carbon Sink Construction, wants to make building with local and natural materials the new standard in the regions of Flanders and the Netherlands. They do this by:

  • Engaging in chain development for the local economy.
  • Analyzing the CO2 emissions and environmental impact of construction projects.
  • Determining the CO2 storage capacity of building materials.
  • Accelerating a clear CO2 standard in the construction sector and a straightforward calculation methodology.

With clear communication and knowledge sharing, CASCO aims to lower the threshold and make materials more accessible to a wider audience. Finally, the project also supports construction professionals with adapted and new training programs.
