Breadcrumb
The strategic agenda for chemicals & plastics is accelerating the transition to a sustainable and circular chemical and plastics sector in Flanders. An essential change of course, because production and consumption patterns are still overwhelmingly linear.
This means that materials are designed without considering reuse. And that harmful substances stay in circulation for a given function. And that there is (too) little focus on reusing raw materials. And that only some of the waste collected is recycled.
Cooperation the priority
Cooperation the priority
The strategic agenda combines the strengths of companies, knowledge institutions, governments and civil society to turn the situation around. Through joint actions, we work toward circular design (ecodesign), alternative raw materials such as CO₂- and bio-based materials, smart recycling technologies and phasing out substances of very high concern.
The goal? To become a circular hub in Europe by 2030, with future-proof products and processes that focus on safety, sustainability and resource efficiency.
Making circularity the norm
This strategic agenda stands out by taking a broad view of the entire value chain: from raw material to product, from production to recycling. We go further than just inspiration in this regard. We focus on knowledge sharing, collaboration across sectors and regions, and concrete experiments in the field. This is the only way circular chemistry and plastics processing will become the norm rather than the exception.
Leading the way
The strategic agenda is managed by OVAM and essenscia, in cooperation with Circular Flanders. Leaders of work paths and actions include Agoria, Denuo, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Catalisti/Moonshot, VITO, VIL, VKC-Centexbel, BBL, VLAIO and POM Limburg.
Together with various other partners, the strategic agenda is actively building this ecosystem. The joint efforts are creating scale, impact and direction.
