Reusable growing substrates for circular ornamental plant cultivation
For the past two years, the breeding company JoluPlant NV at Staden has been investing in upgrading and reusing growing substrates on the basis of peat, originating from strawberry and cucumber growers in the local area.
The ornamental plant company believes that these substrates can be reworked to create new, usable, top-quality compost. Together with the Testing Centre for Ornamental plant cultivation (Proefcentrum voor Sierteelt or PCS) and the Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO), the aim is to closely examine that retention and processing system and, where necessary, adjust it and improve its 'green’ credentials. This will also be checked according to the legislative framework.
The efficiency of the steam process will be monitored on the basis of the physiochemical characteristics of the growing substrates and will, if necessary, be fine-tuned. The substrates that are created as a result will be upgraded to create an end-product that can be used to cultivate
