KORTOM LEUVEN: Kortere en efficiëntere ketens voor voedsel en voedselresten in de regio Leuven

Shorter and more efficient chains for food and leftovers in Leuven and its surroundings

Rikolto Belgium is aiming for a more efficient food chain in Leuven and its surroundings. The aim of the project is to set up an efficient ‘short-chain’ distribution platform in the outskirts of Leuven. Products will be picked up from producers in a 15- to 20-kilometre range around the city.

These products include fresh produce, such as potatoes, vegetables, fruit, dairy and meat, as well as processed products, such as jam, honey, fruit juice and beer. The products will be delivered to customers in Leuven and its immediate surroundings, including hotels and catering establishments, supermarkets, shops, industrial kitchens, food teams etc. The platform wants to organise efficient pick-up and delivery, including environmentally-friendly transport suited to the urban context. The project encourages all stakeholders in the chain to adopt a sustainable approach, from producers to distributors and customers. In addition to this, it aims to reduce food waste and make the most of food surpluses.
