CIRCULER

A large circular area in Leuven

Interleuven has big plans for a circular area in Leuven. How can we make optimal use of the characteristics and assets of an area? Which principles should we use to make an area as circular as possible? How can we facilitate matchmaking? How can we use (and share) a space as efficiently as possible? These are the questions this project focuses on, from different perspectives and through collaboration with a vast partner network. The resulting concept and ideas will be tested on a cluster of business parks south of Leuven. The aim is to co-create these spaces in collaboration with future users, local residents and companies.

The innovative solutions proposed include the concept of ‘m³’ instead of ‘m²’ as a solution for a more economical use of space, facilitating the purchase of services geared at a specific area rather than on the purchase of goods/materials, providing shared infrastructure, innovative tenders and/or the launch of a community land trust of companies and governments. Moreover, tools will be presented in the management and issuance plan of the business park to encourage new companies to adopt a circular approach to the development of their buildings and their operations.

This project meets the vision of the new structural plan of the City of Leuven, helps implement it and can provide the necessary tools to boost the development of the entire region. It will also set out a protocol and define the tools needed to give everyone a push towards circular development at local level, both in Flanders and beyond.
