Circular Retrofit Lab

Repurposing of student accommodation using sustainable materials and green techniques

Eight existing modular student halls of residence on the campus at Vrije Universiteit Brussel have been turned into a Circular Retrofit Lab, a place for experimenting with the development of circular concepts with students, researchers and building partners.

This project is providing a boost to circular renovation for the entire campus, as it shows how student accommodation can be adapted to meet changing needs and functions. Cladding components, techniques and interiors can be reassembled, adapted and reused, and there's no demolition rubble.

New business models are being developed with construction-industry partners so that sustainable building materials and installation techniques can be offered as a service. As a participant in Green Deal Circular Purchasing, the VUB is able to expand these initiatives further. Retrofit Lab’s findings will be presented at an exhibition in the lab itself, presented as a case-study by Vlaanderen Circulair, processed as training items for students, and disseminated via a project website, in press articles and trade media.
