Circular Municipality for the Future

Higher spatial returns and lower consumption of raw materials

The project Circular Municipality for the Future is supporting the work over the next five years on ensuring higher spatial returns and lower usage of raw materials.

Every day, around six hectares of open space is eliminated. Simultaneously, 40% of material flows go to building projects. This needs to be drastically reduced. That is the aim of this project from the Bond Beter Leefmilieu Vlaanderen (Society for Better Quality of Life in Flanders), the Flemish association for space and planning and the Union of Flemish Cities and Municipalities.

These organisations are developing operational models for circular repurposing of various types of empty premises. The also make recommendations for the circular acquisition of building materials and equipment.

An innovative collaborative model with associations, residents, urban developers, municipalities and sector organisations forms the basis for creative workshops and preparatory research into the circular future of space and infrastructure.

Their results will be used to create an inspiration book and hold a conference. The project will be shared with all Flemish local councils through the Municipality for the Future programme.
