Green, healthy, local and circular
Many products are made from non-renewable resources such as petroleum. This goes against the principles of the circular economy, where the aim is to minimise waste, and reuse as much as possible.
The bio-economy takes a better approach: it focuses on activities and industry based on natural and renewable waste streams, for example from agriculture and landscape management. And uses these as a raw material for a sustainable industry.
That way, we can produce nutrients, building materials and special chemicals that replace fossil materials and even store carbon.
Link in the circular economy
The strategic agenda 'bio-economy' includes all actions that put sustainable applications of organic materials into practice. From innovative landscape management and natural building materials to utilising crop residues. In this way, the bio-economy adds a biological loop to the circular economy. And it ensures a continuous supply of renewable raw materials to produce food.
Actions across sectors
The bio-economy is not an island. It connects different sectors, to bolster our economic prosperity and make our environment healthier. The strategic agenda focuses on three action paths in this regard, and the challenges they entail.
